Calls For Action On Radon Gas
Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú has raised the issue of high levels of radon gas in Irish schools. He said that a study carried out by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland covering 685 schools around the country identified 175 schools where levels of the naturally occurring radioactive gas exceeded the safety limit.
Senator Ó Murchú said that, in view of the well documented health hazards attached to radon gas, there is growing concern on this whole issue. Long term exposure to this gas has been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
In view of the recent study and indeed .previous studies, Senator Ó Murchú called for urgent action on the issue. We must, he said, take every action and precaution to allay the concerns of people.
